The Dixie National Forest is located near Cedar City (Utah), covering almost 2 million square acres. It has a diverse wilderness with forests, hills, plateaus and mountains. Despite this beauty, many people visit the forest for its recreation and activities, most especially hiking and camping opportunities in this unique wilderness.
Utah's Dixie National Forest is not far from Cedar City, covering a huge expanse of wilderness, including lush forests, rolling hills, flat plateaus and towering mountains. Even the rivers are a site for sore eyes with colorful cliff tops and steep angled gorges. Most importantly, people come to the forest to entertain themselves with recreation and other activities.
The forest's weather experiences varied extremes. Some areas have heavy snowfall and rain during the year, whereas other areas are subject to frequent summer storms and torrential downpours. August is by far the wettest time.
The Forest has many climatic extremes. Precipitation ranges from 10 inches in the lower elevations to more than 40 inches per year near Brian Head Peak. At the higher elevations, most of the annual precipitation falls as snow. Thunderstorms are common during July and August and produce heavy rains. In some areas, August is the wettest month of the year. However, it is the temperatures that vary the greatest – over 100 in the summer and below -30 in the winter.
Entertainment is not just limited to fishing and camping. Tourists enjoy hiking, horseback riding, bird watching, picnics, snowmobiling, canoeing, swimming, sailing, biking and water skiing. In fact, the wilderness' over 83 thousand acres are naturally tailored to accommodate these.
