Whether hiking, mountain biking or driving, a visit to the Hurricane Cliffs in southern Utah is very rewarding. They sit amidst a system of trails, but offer a landscape that is breathtakingly beautiful, brown soil and cliffs set high above the greenery of the valley below them.
The cliffs are visited by thousands each year, who mainly come to climb their steep face or cycle over its rough terrain on their mountain bikes. The nearby trail is part of a huge loop, some twenty-one miles long. Whether riding or walking, the first part is just a gentle and gradual climb. The trail begins to twist and turn and at some points, the trail sits precariously on the edge of the cliffs, nothing between it and the rushing waters of the Virgin River, some fifty or more feet below. There are no safety barriers, so any use of the trails to get to the cliffs should be done with extreme caution, especially when taking young children. However, the trail is wide enough to accommodate two way cycling traffic, so one would have a hard time tumbling into the river unless one was just plain careless. Also, watching for cyclists is essential – speeds have been clocked at about 30 miles/hour!
