The Kolob Reservoir (Utah) sits inside the state's Zion National Park, and is easily reached via car. The area is not very well known to visitors, though locals use it for summer homes. However, its views are superb, with many things to do off the beaten-track, including fishing, swimming, boating and camping.
Zion National Park (Utah) is home to the Kolob Reservoir, a little known camping and fishing hot spot. The area provides a true respite from the hustle and bustle of regular wilderness venues. There is so much to see and even winter camping is quite the experience.
A long road leads into the area, taking visitors through some amazing scenery – high cliffs, lush valleys, canyons, trails and even lava flows. Great forests and farmland line the roadside, adding a wonderful contrast to the distant soft reds of the mountains and cliff faces. It can be steep in places, and the plant life suddenly changes to include cacti. At this point there are many camping spots or seemingly penthouse lots with views to die for.
There are some ancient lava flows and long since dead, lava cones nearby. These tower above the landscape and can be clearly seen from the reservoir.
Getting closer to the reservoir, summer homes appear, including ranches, log cabins and other houses, all nestling wherever there is a spot amongst the tall firs. However, the land is public; camping spots are plentiful. Most people set up near the edge of the water, hooking up their lines to fish. In fact, fishing here is great fun – salmon, steelhead and trout are the most predominant.
