Utah's Mount Carmel is home to the Maynard Dixon's house and his famous paintings. Visitors flock from all over the state to enjoy this artist's talented works that express the beauty of American native cultures. The home is a beautiful log cabin set amongst the firs, located just east of Zion National Park.
Not far from Zion National Park and Mount Carmel, the home of Maynard Dixon (Utah) sits quietly beneath the towering fir trees, a log house of extreme beauty. It attracts a fair few visitors who are familiar with the artist and his expressive American native and cultural paintings.
Registered nationally as one of the US' historical places, this home was the sparkling backdrop for Dixon's popular artwork. His career begin at the beginning of last century, but it was not until the death of one of his children, and two failed marriages, that Dixon finally settled down. He and his wife, Edith, built the log house in 1939. Both were enamored with the surrounding environment and spent most of their summers relaxing, playing and creating there.
Dixon painted well into his early 70's, when he finally died (1946). A memorial was erected by the cabin with the crest of their symbolic thunderbird. However, Dixon's memory never died. His fans had loved his skills, his understanding of light, distance and the mysterious and haunting influence of American aboriginals on the history of the west. It has been said recently by visitors to the house that Dixon represented not only the beauty, but the spirituality of a once proud people.
