Green Gate Village

The Green Gate Village is a fascinating place close to the Zion National Park in Utah. The village also has a close relationship with Brigham Young, a legendary figure in American history. Planning a trip to Utah and the St. George region? You must visit the Green Gate Village.

The history of the Green Gate Village is fascinating. In the year 1847 Brigham Young ordered the St. George Temple to be painted white. However when the shipment arrived, it was found that the paint was green and not white. Since it could not be returned, Brigham ordered all residents of the village to paint their fences and gates with this green color. And thus, the place came to be known as the Green Gate Village.

More than a century has passed since then, and today, most of the green gates with the original paint are gone. Actually, there is just one remaining, and that is to be found at the entrance to the Green Gate Village itself.

In memory of the historic occasion, the Green Gate Village has now been reconstructed. Eric Dowdle, who is a well-known folk artist, has made an oil painting that portrays how the Green Gate Village would have looked 100 years in the past. Many copies of the Green Gate Village painting can be found, but the original painting has been carefully stored at the City Hall in St. George.

The Green Gate Village is located in the historic old town section of St. George. The address is 76 West Tabernacle, St. George UT 84770. Call up 435-628-6999 to reach the Green Gate Village.
