Silver Reef is a deserted mining town in the Washington County. The nearest town is Leeds, which is just 1.5 miles away. The town is situated north of St George, which is about 15 miles away from the town of Silver Reef. When visiting the area, do make sure that you come to the Silver Reef Gallery and Museum.
The town is known as the ghost town as it is completely devoid of inhabitants. This quaint little town was once bustling with miners and their families who settled here when silver was discovered on sandstone in the nearby Pine Valley Mountains in 1877.
Initially, mining enthusiasts flocked here lured by the prospect of mining silver. The population soared to 2000 in 1901. The town had 100 businesses to its credit along with a racetrack, brewery and brass band. The town had a bank, several salons, restaurants, two newspapers, dance halls and even three cemeteries.
A major fire destroyed the town's infrastructure, followed by flooding of the mines, which skyrocketed silver prices leading to the downfall of the prosperous community.
The Silver Reef Gallery and Museum housed in the building of Wells Fargo & Co. exhibits artifacts used by the inhabitants and works of art by the artist Jerry Anderson. The museum remains open Monday to Saturday 9am to 5 pm.
