Heaps & Imlay Canyon
-
Zion Canyons //
The Heaps and Imlay Canyon routes are both long, potentially multi-day canyoneering experiences that highlight some of the most technical and difficult routes in Zion. Despite their difficulty, both are popular routes and are considered classics, due to the numerous rappels, tight down climbs, deep potholes and the sheer beauty of the canyons. Be warned, though, both canyons are very strenuous, require strong technical canyoneering skills and could prove fatal to explorers.
Heaps and Imlay Canyons are two of the more difficult canyons found in Zion. Both contain numerous long rappels (between 20 and 30 of them); many potholes that may or may not be filled with icy cold water and require difficult exits through smooth, overhanging lips; and long distances that require bringing along larger amounts of gear. That said, these canyons are also classics, offering experienced canyoneers a challenging and demanding route through two beautiful slot canyons that is guaranteed to leave a sense of accomplishment. If you do attempt these canyons, make sure that you are prepared to drill out of the potholes.
