Icebox Canyon

Part of the Kolob Canyons, found in the less-busy and more remote northwest corner of Zion, Icebox Canyon runs almost directly north-south from Beatty Point to the Kolob Arches. This deep, narrow canyon holds water longer than many of the other, wider canyons in Zion, ensuring that it remains greener, also. The water also gives Icebox Canyon its other name – Waterfalls Canyon.

Icebox Canyon is an ideal route for those looking for a more remote, technical canyon adventure that can be done in one long day. While water is needed for the long, dry approach, a two-to-three mile hike along the Kolob Arch/La Verkin Creek trail, after dropping down into the canyon, which requires several rappels through the watercourse, water will be available for purification. After entering the canyon proper, follow the waterway through several more rappels, including one into a large pool, and over a waterfall (hence the Waterfalls Canyon name) while enjoying the vegetated red rock canyon walls and features. Although the route is long and technical, the finish, a spectacular waterfall and a view of Kolob Arch, makes the long day well worth it.
