Great White Throne
The Great White Throne is one of Zion National Park's most prestigious mountains. It towers thousands of feet above the surrounding valley floor and its winding river. There are many places there to hike and climb; sheer cliffs and steep ridges make this a true climbers and hikers paradise. However, it is not for the inexperienced.
Zion National Park's towering Great White Throne Mountain sits against the backdrop of a lush green valley. It has long been known as the park's most important peak, but not as important as it is to the many enthusiasts who come to challenge its cliffs and other sections, in the hope at adding their names to the long list of those who have conquered it.
Great White rises more than two thousand feet above the canyon's floor. Visitors can view its majesty from the security of the park's shuttle bus, which stops at varied viewing points. Currently there are no real trails to use to get to the peak, but that has not stopped climbers and hikers from giving it a shot.
The mountain appears like a snow covered monolith, visible from all locations in the park. It has become the symbol of the park itself, and draws in an international crowd.
Climbers see this as one of many world mountains that train them for the ultimate prize, Everest. The mountain's first successful climb was achieved by W. Evans, who barely escaped with his life, and had to be subsequently rescued. However, the climbers have not stopped coming, as have the hikers and tourists.
