Steeped in volcanic and natural history, Lava Point (Kolob Reservoir area), Zion National Park, is a constant source of relaxation and also curiosity for many visitors. It has some superb views and leads to many of the areas best trails.
The Point is an ancient formation that was created by flowing lava. It stands at over seven thousand feet and towers above the rest of the park, making it one of the best vantage points. From there the entirety of the park is laid out at its feet. Massive extinct cinder domes are easily seen, which sit some ten miles away.
The road leading to the point is not very well traveled, and is a good way to get away from the more crowded parts of the park. It is also a faster way to get out into the wilderness, view cliffs, valleys and canyons enroute. It travels right passed the point, which is the park's highest point. The nearby trails are also a treat, allowing hikers to descend deep into lower levels, explore the cinder domes and enjoy a picnic or two from various ledges. Closer to the point the trail does veer off towards varied slot canyons, all of which can be seen from the point.
It is important when visiting the point to take along plenty of water and food, as there are no facilities enroute. In case of emergencies, registering at the local ranger station is also advised.
