The Subway
The Subway in Zion National Park is truly a thrill for outdoor lovers and canyoneering enthusiasts everywhere. Zion National Park offers all adventurers the excitement of The Subway. This attraction has become one of the most popular in the park, with the Left Fork of North Creek carving out a thrilling route.
The Subway is a canyoneering route through some incredible scenery. Although a semi-technical route requiring about seven to nine hours to complete, it's worth the preparation necessary to brave this amazing trek. If you are just getting started in canyoneering, this is the place to start!
Besides climbing down the boulders and ledges, navigating the waterfalls and swimming through some cold pools, you will be wading through some chilly water. You can even stop and view some dinosaur tracks, the ancient reminders of creatures who likely walked this very path.
It's best to attempt The Subway with a group of people, with at least one who is experienced. If taking along items you want to keep dry, you'll need a drybag. Don't try and use a baggie as this won't work as you wade and swim through this canyon. If going during cold months, you'll need a wetsuit. The best time to go is from May through September.
After getting a backcountry permit at the Visitor's Center, you will proceed to the Wildcat Trailhead where you'll begin your journey. You are in for a treat by tackling The Subway in Zion National Park. A mystical route through a multi-colored canyon filled with wondrous waterfalls, a chiseled tunnel, mossy rocks like satin and other displays of nature, it's an experience not to miss!
