Hours & Seasons

Coming to Zion National Park is always an adventure. Make your getaway extra special by planning ahead. It always helps to be familiar with the hours and seasonal openings within the park. This way you can ensure you don’t miss a minute of fun and have a wonderful vacation.

Zion National Park is open all year, every single day. Some facilities may close during certain times of the year due to weather or other circumstances. Temperatures can vary as much as 30 degrees between day and night temperatures, and also change depending on elevation. Weather can be unpredictable with storms coming in unexpectedly. You should always be prepared when visiting Zion National Park.

Spring is a beautiful time to come to Zion. Wet days are usual, but you’ll find warm sunny days as well. The spring wildflowers bloom beginning in April and peak in May. Summer days are hot, getting as high as 110 degrees, but it gets very comfortable at night. You’ll experience some thunderstorms in the afternoon from around mid-July through the middle of September. Summer is a good time to visit the waterfalls that become active. Autumn colors begin in September at higher elevations. Days are clear and mild. There are mild winters in Zion Canyon, with some rain or light snow. Heavier snow falls at the higher elevations. Nighttime temperatures get down to the 20s or 30s. The Kolob Terrace road is closed in winter, but this is the only one. From November through March you should be ready for winter driving conditions.

Pedestrian and Bicycle Traffic through Zion-Mt. Carmel Tunnel

Pedestrians and bicycles are prohibited from going through the Zion-Mt. Carmel Tunnel. Anyone needing transport through the tunnel must arrange shuttle service through this tunnel.

Shuttle Service

The free shuttle service begins operation in April and runs through November. You can park in Springdale and ride the town shuttle to Zion National Park, for the convenience. There is limited parking within the park. The Springdale Shuttle will take you to six locations in Springdale and Zion Canyon Shuttle stops at eight locations within the park.

Visitor Centers and Hours

  • Zion Canyon Visitor Center – Open everyday except Christmas Day. Hours are: Spring: 8 am to 5 pm; Summer: 8 am to 8 pm; Fall: 8 am to 6 pm; Winter: 8 am to 5 pm.
  • Kolob Canyon Visitor Center – Open everyday except Christmas Day. Hours are: Spring: 8 am to 5 pm; Summer: 8 am to 5 pm; Fall: 8 am to 4:30 pm; Winter: 8 am to 4:30 pm.

The Backcountry Desk is located at the Zion Canyon Visitor Center. Here you can get all the backcountry information you need.

Hours:

  • April 26 to May 21- 7 am to 6 pm
  • May 22 to September 7 - 7 am to 8 pm
  • September 8 to October 12 - 7 am to 6 pm
  • October 12 to the next Spring - 8 am to 4:30 pm

Campgrounds

  • South Campground – located in Zion Canyon. Little shade. Two vehicles or one RV allowed and a maximum of six people and two tents. Comfort stations in the campground and showers and laundry in Springdale.
  • Watchman Campground – located in Zion Canyon. Reservations are recommended. Little shade. Two vehicles or one RV allowed and a maximum of six people and two tents. Comfort stations in the campground and showers and laundry in Springdale.
  • Lava Point Campground – about a one-hour drive from Zion Canyon on Kolob Terrace. Two vehicles or one RV allowed and a maximum of six people and two tents. Comfort stations in the campground and showers and laundry in Springdale.
