Rules & Regulations

To make your trip to Zion National Park both fun and safe, be sure to know and abide by the Park’s rules and regulations.

Permits, fees, rules and regulations apply not only to humans, but also to pets and vehicles. They are easy to follow, but learning about them is the first key step. The park is found just off Route 9, and the visitor center is full of brochures, maps and other information, as well as the best spot to buy permits and pay any fees. Lists of the rules and regulations are clearly posted, and copies are available from staff members.  

  • Permits – Permits are required for all overnights including hiking through the Narrows, and tributaries, Left Fork of North Creek (the Subway), Kolob Creek, and all canyons requiring the use of technical equipment.
  • Private Vehicles – Those private vehicles without camping or other permits need to park in the designated parking areas.
  • Pets - Pets must be leashed at all times while in the park. Pets are allowed in designated areas only including all developed areas.
  • Bicycles – All bicycles must remains on the paved roads.
  • Wildlife -Please do not feed any wildlife. If fed, animals like deer, bighorn sheep, coyotes and rock squirrels can become aggressive while begging for human food and have been known to bite.
  • Campfires – Gathering wood for and/or having a campfire is not permitted.
  • Hiking - Please stick to designated trails only while hiking. Due to the many dangerous geological features, please keep your children close and do not allow them to wander freely.
  • Enjoy but do not take - Removal of any rocks, plants, artifacts or fossils is strictly prohibited.
