Winter Activities
Zion National Park has a wealth of winter activities for young and old. The most popular by far are skiing and snowshoeing. However, a lot of visitors also go there in the snowy months to enjoy snowmobiling. Whatever the choice, the trails are beyond compare and provide fun and excitement for one and all.
Whether wanting to do some cross-country skiing or head out into the backcountry for snowshoeing, Zion National Park has quite a lot of activities that winter lovers cannot get enough of. Though most trails are closed during the winter, certain ones are specially tailored and maintained to bring more fun to those who can bare the cold.
The majority of the winter activities involve sports in the park. Three main sports attract a fair crowd of visitors who stay at the lodge or resort, but some are returning locals who go to the park every weekend to enjoy snowshoeing, snowmobiling or even cross country skiing. Most of the trails used follow along the northern rim, high above the Virgin River, high up on a plateau.
The trails for snowmobiling are quite extensive and the scenery is truly breathtaking. Routes can take a full day or even a half day. Plenty of rentals are available. Cross country skiing and snowshoeing can be done on different trails, guided or unguided, and trails offer varied levels to suit all skill sets.
One precaution that rangers advise during winter times in the park is to make sure someone knows when and where one is going so that in case of bad weather or accidents, help can be easily dispatched. Also, warm clothing and plenty of water are critical.
